About the Artist
I am inspired by the color of light as it affects memory of place, and feeling of place. I am captivated by the chaos and mystery of shapes, lines and colors that are inherent in the complexities of nature.
I work in both representational and the non-representational forms of expression. I am drawn to the square format as it allows a framework for the natural rhythm of colors and shapes and provides a sense of containment, of grounding. Painting with oils best captures my desire for luminous light punctuated by mark making and color notes.
My work portrays my sense of place, of time, of sensation and of spirit.
Rebecca received a bachelor’s degree in art history from Wellesley College in 1972, where she also studied painting and drawing. She later worked in New York City for Art in America magazine and Abrams, Publishers before moving to Maine in 1977. After a hiatus working in finance, Rebecca returned to her first love - oil painting. She studied at the Maine College of Art (MECA) Continuing Studies in Portland, ME and has been fortunate to study with area artists Colin Page, Sarah Knock, Diane Dahlke, John Ventimiglia and Bjorn Runquist. Recently, she has worked with Connecticut artist Pam Gordinier and she mentored with Marianne Mitchell, a well-known contemporary abstract artist.
Rebecca credits her interest in painting to her late father, John W. Hatch, an artist and former professor of art at the University of New Hampshire, who inspired her for a lifetime.
She currently splits her time between South Portland and Vinalhaven, ME and Vero Beach, FL. Her landscape paintings are shown at the New Era Gallery on Vinalhaven, ME.
